Ltd. has organized a press tour for selective media to attend a 3 days visit in Ajinomoto Co., Inc. headquarter in Tokyo and plants in Kawasaki from 16-18 April 2002. During the trip, an interview opportunity was provided with Mr. Takuzo Kitamura, Executive Managing Director & President of Global Foods & Amino Acids Company, to corporate three-year plan including business development in Mainland China and other Asia Regions.

Introduction of Kawasaki Plant

Kawasaki Plant was established in September 1914 and began producing "AJI-NO-MOTO", a seasoning that gave food an especially delicious taste, called umami. Umami is now recognized as an independent fifth basic taste sensation separate from the four basic ones of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter.

Since then the plant has served as the main production center of Ajinomoto Co., Inc. Currently the plant is also producing other fine food seasonings such as "Hon-Dashi" and "Cook Do", various types of amino acids, and specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Kawasaki Plant is one of the world leader in the production of high-quality food seasonings and amino acids. Ajinomoto combines up-to-date-technology with on-going nutritional research to provide their customers with the utmost in health and satisfaction.

Ajinomoto Products Production Line

1. Hon-Dashi - an essential ingredient in Japanese cooking, used both as a base in soup stocks and as a general-purpose seasoning to give the finishing touch to any fine Japanese dish.
2. Cook Do - through a combination of advanced food processing technology and traditional Chinese ingredients, "Cook Do" captures the exotic and colorful tastes of Chinese dishes.
3. Pharmaceuticals Products - all the pharmaceuticals products are produced using Amino Acids which is the essence of health, energy and life. Using fermentation technology, Kawasaki Plant produces various amino acid compounds for food seasonings, nutrients, and pharmaceuticals.

Optimum Research & Development Structure

Ajinomoto history of R&D stretches back to research of amino acids. For more than 90 years, we have been involved in the development of manufacturing technologies and practical amino acid applications to create a wide variety of products.

The Central Research Laboratories, the center for corporate-level research, the creation of a strong scientific basis for confirming the safety and beneficial of amino of amino acids over a full range of quantities and usage conditions was a priority.

Announcement of Three-Year Plan

Ajinomoto has drawn up the 02/04 Three-Year Plan, which summarizes management direction for the Ajinomoto Group as ¢écorporate group in the future.

In order to achieve a standard appropriate to a world-class company, numerical objectives include net sales of 1.1 trillion yen, net income of 45 billion yen and return on equity (ROE) of at least 10% in fiscal year 2004.

We have established basic management strategies of 02/04 Three-Year Plan:
1. Expanding our business in growth sectors
2. Shifting toward a high-earnings structure
3. Strengthening corporate governance
4. Nurturing personnel capable of working in the global arena
5. Operating in harmony with society as a good corporate citizen

- Expansion of the retail business overseas
- Strengthening and expansion of our global materials business
